The legendary Birkebeinerrennet

The legendary Birkebeinerrennet takes place March 14th 2026. Birkebeinerrennet is a 53 km classic-style cross-country ski race from Rena to Lillehammer. The course takes you across two mountains, through breathtaking scenery and ever-changing conditions. Every participant skis with a backpack weighing at least 3.5 kg – a tribute to the historic journey that shaped this race.

It was in this very landscape that the infant prince Håkon Håkonsson was carried to safety in the 13th century. The event was first held in 1932 to honor the Birkebeiners who saved the heir to the throne by skiing over the mountains through storm and danger. Since then, the route has been a challenge embraced by hundreds of thousands of skiers.

Whether you come for the challenge, the community, or the pure joy of skiing, Birkebeinerrennet is an experience unlike any other.
