Track
Note: The total elevation gain may vary slightly depending on the GPS device, watch, or app used. The stated elevation gain is calculated based on our official GPX files and map data.Course description for the Birkebeinerløp
Course Description – 20.2 km
The race starts at the Birkebeiner Ski Stadium in Lillehammer (525 meters above sea level) and finishes at Håkons Hall. The course runs through varied forest terrain and covers a total distance of 20.2 km, with 337 meters of elevation gain and 569 meters of descent.Start – Sjøseterlia (0–6 km)
The first 6 km follow the Olympic cross-country trails from the 1994 Winter Games, featuring a mix of trail surfaces including grass-covered ski tracks and forest paths. This section includes the highest point of the course at 611 meters in Sjøseterlia, along with some steep downhill sections. Be cautious, especially in wet conditions.Sjøseterlia – Mesnasaga (6–9.5 km)
After Sjøseterlia, the course continues on the Olympic trails before joining the Birkebeiner Trail coming down from Sjusjøen. After a short loop toward Nevla, you return to the Birkebeiner Trail, which leads across Sjøsetervegen and down to Sagmyra—a grass-covered track. A timing checkpoint is located at Sjøsetervegen, approximately 7.7 km into the course (12.5 km from the finish). From there, the route follows the Ingalåmi trail and climbs toward Myggbukta on a built-up path with dirt, gravel, and some stones. The final 1 km to the Mesnasaga timing mat is a gentle downhill on forest road.Mesnasaga – Kroken (10–14 km)
After the aid station at Mesnasaga, the course continues along the Ingalåmi trail and crosses the Mesna River on a firm but occasionally rocky path. You then follow Vårsætervegen, a flat gravel forest road with grass along the sides. About 1.5 km before the Kroken aid station, the course turns back into the Ingalåmi trail with more terrain and some wet sections. A timing checkpoint is located at Kroken, approximately 14 km into the race (6 km from the finish).Kroken – Finish at Håkons Hall (14–21 km)
The final section begins with a flat trail that is somewhat rocky with a few soft spots. It then joins the Maihaugen trail, which includes some steep hills and short, wet areas. Behind Maihaugen, the course merges into the Tverrløypa, which is flat, easy to run, and on solid ground. The trail crosses two local roads in the Nybu area—be alert for possible traffic. From the top of Kleivbakken, the course descends diagonally and includes a short loop at the bottom before reaching the finish at Håkons Hall. -

Track
Note: The total elevation gain may vary slightly depending on the GPS device, watch, or app used. The stated elevation gain is calculated based on our official GPX files and map data.
Course description for the Birken FjellmaratonThe race starts at Sjusjøen Langrennsarena. The first 2 kilometres follow a gravel road before the course continues onto trails through beautiful mountain terrain across Sjusjøfjellet and Lunkefjell. This section offers scenic surroundings and varied surfaces.
After approximately 7 kilometres, the course follows the road from Nordseter for around 2 kilometres before continuing along the north side of Nevelvannet. First on road, then on trail climbing towards Nevelfjell. This part of the trail is dry and easy to run on. The course turns around at 1072 metres above sea level, just before the summit of Nevelfjell, and returns along the south side of Nevelvannet. Some wet and boggy sections may occur here.
The route then returns to the trail across Lunkefjell. Before reaching the cabin area at Sjusjøen, there is a slightly steep and rocky downhill section where it is recommended to reduce your pace and run with control.
After the descent, the course joins the Birkebeinerrittet route. From here, the course follows gravel roads and trails towards Nevla and Sjøseterveien. This section is varied but easy to run, and is also well suited for runners with little trail running experience.
With approximately 13 kilometres remaining to the finish, the route joins the Birkebeinerløpet course. Here you run on solid trails and gravel roads all the way to the final aid station at Kroken, located 6 kilometres before the finish line.
The final kilometres include some slightly steeper and rocky sections before the course finishes with the last 2 kilometres on gravel road towards the finish area.

Track
Course description for the Birken Aktiv Against Cancer 7.5 km race
The race starts at the Birkebeiner ski stadium – sharing the same start and opening section as the other races. The first 400 meters are on asphalt before the course turns left, goes under the bridge, and continues on gravel behind the hall near the dog training area. It then climbs through the ski play area and enters the lighted trail (lysløypa), which has some uneven terrain, until it reaches Birkebeinervegen.
The course follows the left side of Birkebeinervegen for about 800 meters – outside the fence, not in the road. At the end of the road, it transitions onto a narrow, rocky trail and crosses the canal. A water station is located just before this turn.
After crossing the canal, the trail continues straight ahead over Mesna River via wooden footbridges – be careful, they may be slippery when wet. The course then joins the Maihaugen trail, which includes some steep hills and short, soft or rocky sections, before merging into the Tverrløypa behind Maihaugen.
Tverrløypa is flat and easy to run, but crosses two small roads in Nybu – watch out for traffic. From the top of Kleivbakken, the trail descends diagonally toward the finish.
The final 4 km follow the same route as the Birkebeinerløpet. There is some uneven terrain down toward Maihaugen, but the final stretch is on good trail. 500 meters before the finish, the route turns left around the football field and heads down to the finish area south of Håkons Hall.
