On Saturday, August 30, the very first GravelBirken will take place – and the brand-new gravel cycling race is already sold out. All 400 spots were snapped up quickly, confirming that gravel biking has gained solid ground in Norway.

GravelBirken is part of SykkelBirken, expanding the event weekend with a new format focused on experience, variation, and achievement. The concept builds on Birken’s long-standing tradition while drawing inspiration from both classic mountain biking and the international gravel scene.

Two Distances – One Unique Experience

Start and finish are in Lillehammer, with two race distances to choose from:

  • GravelBirken 200 km – approx. 3,300 meters of elevation, technically demanding with GPS navigation, trails, and stream crossings

  • GravelBirken 100 km – approx. 1,800 meters of elevation, well-marked and less technical, ideal for beginners

Both routes offer stunning nature, varied gravel terrain, and the same great Birken atmosphere that has defined the event series for over 30 years.

Gravel for a New Generation

The race has struck a chord with a younger audience – 40% of participants are under the age of 35. Women make up 19.6% of the GravelBirken 100 km field, while the more demanding 200 km sees 4.4% female participation. By comparison, women made up 13% of this year’s Birkebeinerrittet participants – a slight increase from last year.

“We launched GravelBirken as a pilot with a limited number of entries, and the response has been overwhelming. It’s clear that many riders have been waiting for a Birken event designed for gravel,” says project manager Vebjørn Rønning.

Part of a Weekend Full of Cycling

GravelBirken is held the same day as the iconic Birkebeinerrittet, as well as HalvBirken, UltraBirken, and UngdomsBirken. Together, these races make up SykkelBirken – a weekend packed with cycling experiences for all ages and skill levels.

Whether you're chasing a new personal best, taking on your first challenge, or just looking to share a memorable weekend with friends – SykkelBirken offers something for everyone. After the finish, AfterBike at Håkons Hall brings riders together with food, music, awards, a prosecco bar, and family-friendly activities.

“We’re excited to see the very first GravelBirken come to life, and we look forward to hearing what the participants think of this new concept. Their feedback will be crucial as we develop the race further for 2026,” says Birken AS CEO, Jostein Buraas.
