GravelBirken – gravel, mountains, and pure pedal power!

Birken – March 26, 2025
To meet the growing interest in gravel cycling, Birken is launching an all-new gravel race in 2025. GravelBirken combines gravel roads, mountain landscapes, and pure pedaling power — offering a fresh way to experience the Norwegian wilderness.
Two Distances – One Intense Experience
Choose between 100 km and 200 km routes, both designed to challenge participants with tough climbs and thrilling descents, all while delivering a spectacular nature experience.
GravelBirken 200 km: Approximately 3,300 meters of elevation gain in hilly terrain. The estimated winning time is between 6 and 7 hours, with an average finish time of around 10 hours. This demanding route requires participants to download the correct GPS track for navigation. Several familiar food stations from Birkebeinerrittet and UltraBirken will be available along the way.
GravelBirken 100 km: Approximately 1,800 meters of elevation gain with an estimated winning time of around 3 hours. No GPS is required for this route, making it more accessible and ideal for riders looking to try gravel cycling for the first time.
The race starts and finishes in Lillehammer and takes place on the same day as the traditional Birkebeinerrittet. This means participants can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and community spirit that SykkelBirken is known for.
Why Gravel?
Gravel cycling combines the best of road and mountain biking, offering the freedom to explore gravel roads, forest paths, and trails. The trend is growing rapidly worldwide, with many seeing gravel racing as an accessible entry point into the cycling scene.

Vebjørn Rønning, Project Manager for GravelBirken, Experienced Gravel Cyclist, and One of the Race's Founders, Sees Great Potential in the New Concept:
"The gravel cycling community in Norway is growing, and with GravelBirken, we can bring together cyclists from both Norway and abroad for a spectacular mountain adventure."
For Vebjørn, gravel is about more than just distance and speed:
"What fascinates me most about gravel is the unique culture. It's social and inclusive, and everyone is welcome. Even at the elite level, there's a more laid-back vibe, where people have a great time with friends before, during, and after the race. The social aspect, the sense of achievement, and the community spirit are much more in focus."
GravelBirken Offers Not Only Breathtaking Scenery but Also Exciting Challenges Along the Way:
"The course winds through forests and mountains, with streams to cross, technical sections, demanding climbs, and thrilling descents. Participants will truly get to experience Norwegian nature at its finest."
Vebjørn emphasizes that GravelBirken is for everyone:
"It’s meant to be a real challenge, but also an enjoyable experience. Gravel is about the joy of cycling and being part of a community. Bring a friend, ride together, and have a great day on the bike. Pack some tasty snacks in your pocket and enjoy the journey. Having fun is what matters most."
